PWCS Robotics Teams Headed for VEX World Tournament

From Prince William County Public Schools:

On Saturday, January 15, Potomac Middle School hosted a VEX robotics tournament open to all middle school teams. Twenty-six teams participated in five matches, which culminated in a playoff match. The participants were vying for one of six possible qualifying slots that could send their team to the VEX World Tournament in Orlando, Florida on April 13–15.

Recognition Ceremony Tonight to Honor 41 County Teachers

From Prince William County Public Schools:Twenty-three Prince William County Public School teachers who earned National Board certification or recertification in 2010 and another 18 teachers nominated this year for “The Washington Post” Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award will be recognized at a School Board reception on February 8 at 6 p.m. at the Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center in Manassas. School Board members are expected to attend.   National Board Certification indicates that teachers have met a set of standards established by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards that define the knowledge, skills, and accomplishments that comprise teaching excellence.

Annual School Food Shows Set for March 15 and 17

The Prince William County Public Schools annual food shows will be held at Hylton High School on Tuesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 17. Four tastings over two evenings are open to the first 1,000 county students, parents, and staff to sign up in advance. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the Office of School Food and Nutrition Services at 703.791.7314. There will be two tastings each evening, one from 6 to 7 p.m. and a second from 7 to 8 p.m. Hylton High School is located at 14051 Spriggs Road, Woodbridge.

The February 2011 public meetings of the Prince William County School Board will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2 and February 16 in the School Board Meeting Room, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. Agendas for School Board meetings may be viewed online. Agenda items and materials are subject to change up to the time of the meetings.

Schools Open Today as Teacher Workday Postponed to Thursday

From Prince William County Public Schools:

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) will be open on Monday, January 31 and all students are scheduled to report to school. Because of the recent school closures due to inclement weather, report cards will be delayed three days and will now be distributed on February 10. PWCS is following the previously announced contingency plans for the teacher workday and high school exam schedule. Based on school being closed for three days due to the inclement weather, the teacher workday (which had originally been scheduled for Monday, January 31) is now scheduled for Thursday, February 3. High school exams are now scheduled for Monday – Wednesday, January 31 – February 2. All high school students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on exam days.

PWCS Receives Honors from Virginia Department of Education

Congratulations go out to the 33 Prince William County Public Schools that achieved award-winning performances in the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program created by the Virginia Board of Education (BOE). The incentive program, which was created by the Virginia BOE in 2007, recognizes schools and divisions that achieve excellence goals and far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards. There are four levels of awards; the highest honor is the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, followed by the BOE Excellence Award, the BOE Competence to Excellence Award, and the BOE Rising Star Award.
