What: Robotics competition featuring 50 middle and high school students

This summer, more than 250 elementary, middle and high school students participated in six robotics camps (described below) sponsored by Northern Virginia Community College, SPARK Education Foundation, Prince William County Public Schools, Manassas Park City Schools, Manassas City Public Schools, Lockheed Martin, Micron Technology, BAE Systems and Aerojet Corporation.
The final camp concludes Aug. 5 when the advanced robotics students will demonstrate their skills in a competition starting at noon at Manassas Park Elementary School. During this two-week camp, 50 middle and high school students learned about advanced robotic mechanisms and programming.
First Lego League Robotics Camp: Campers learned to build an autonomous robot to carry out pre-designed missions.
Ages: Rising fourth and fifth graders
East Camp: June 27 to July 1
West Camp: July 11 to 15
Vex Robotics Camp 1: Campers built and programmed a robot to complete a 12-foot square maze using sensor input while manipulating objects.
Ages: Rising sixth to eighth graders new to Vex Robotics
East Camp: June 27 to July 1
West Camp: July 11 to 15
Girls Only Vex Robotics Camp: Campers designed, built and programmed a robot while learning leadership principles.
Ages: Rising sixth to 10th graders
West Camp: July 18 to 22
Vex Robotics Camp 2: This two-week camp focused on advanced Vex robotic mechanisms and programming. Strategy and design was discussed for the chassis, drive train, lifting mechanisms and object manipulation.
Ages: Rising eighth to 10th graders with one to two years of Vex experience
West Camp: July 25 to Aug. 5
East camps were held at NOVA’s Woodbridge Campus and west camps met at Manassas Park Elementary School.
