MRSA Updates for the 2011–12 School Year

From Prince William County Public Schools:

Continuing the practice begun in the 2007–08 school year, Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) will report on a monthly basis any confirmed cases of the staph infection known as MRSA during the 2011–12 school year.

This bacterial infection can spread easily among people who spend time in close contact with each other, such as household members and participants in close-contact sports. MRSA is not spread through the air. Personal hygiene is very important in preventing and controlling the spread of MRSA infections. Frequent hand washing with soap and water is the primary means of preventing staph infections.

Three student and two staff cases of MRSA were reported in January 2012. Marumsco Hills Elementary School reported two staff cases; Cedar Point Elementary School, Forest Park High School, and Brentsville District High School each reported one student case. All individuals have been cleared to return to school.
