Prince William, VA- The Prince William Ice Center (5180 Dale Blvd, Woodbridge, VA 22193) will play host to about 1,000 skaters, families, officials and spectators from around the country this weekend during a national speedskating competition.
The Prince William Ice Center was selected to host the event because of its Olympic-size rink, proximity to area airports and because it has the capacity to hold spectators, said Alison Mittelstadt, event committee member for the U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating competition. Speedskating is also growing in popularity in the greater Washington area, she said, with about one-third of the participants coming from the D.C. region.
This is the first national event the Prince William Ice Center has hosted since it reopened in September. The rink was forced to shut down in February 2010 after its roof collapsed due to heavy snowfall.
