MELFA, Va. (WUSA9) -- A small plane piloted by a Prince William County man caught fire after it crashed Thursday afternoon during an attempted landing an airport on Virginia's Eastern Shore, Virginia State police say.

Investigators believe that a gust of wind blew the plane Ferris Crilly of Bristow, Va. was piloting off the runway and across a grassy area. The plane, a 1979 Piper Lance, then hit a storage shed and a light pole before catching fire.   

Melfa and his passenger were not injured in the crash, which police say happened at 3:02 p.m.

The FAA and NTSB have been notified of the crash, which is still under investigation.
