WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man was shot by a Prince William County police officer Monday night after the man allegedly approached the officer with a knife.

According to Prince William County police, officers responded to a home in the 13100 block of Tory Loop in Woodbridge for a report of a domestic disturbance between a mother and her son.

Once officers arrived on scene they began speaking with the mother. While talking to her, police say the son, who was identified as a 25-year-old man, approached the officer with a knife.

The officer then fired and hit the son in the upper body, according to police. The son was flown to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both the mother and the officer were also transported to a local hospital with minor non-gunshot related injuries.

Police say more information will be released about the incident.
