Sun., Apr. 6, Metropolitan School of the Arts Benefit Concert

Lorton, Va.-based Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA), a non-profit performing arts academy, is hosting their annual Spring Benefit Concert on Sun., Apr. 6 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at The George Washington Masonic National Memorial at 101 Callahan Drive in Alexandria, Va. There will be performances by Metropolitan Youth Ballet, Metropolitan Youth Tap Ensemble, MSA’s Impulse Jazz Company, MSA Academy vocalists and live music by local musicians, like Voices of Liberty. Tickets are $75 per person or $100 per couple with proceeds benefitting MSA’s Alexandria studio’s Black Box Theater Project. The MSA Benefit Concert ends at 5:30 p.m. with a reception immediately following at the George Washington Masonic Temple from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Concert tickets include entrance to the reception.

Underground Railroad Quilt Codes on Display at NOVA-Manassas

Underground Railroad Quilt Codes on Display at NOVA-Manassas

Quilts designed and created by master quilter Sharon Tindall will be on display at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College Feb. 3 to 28 in honor of Black History Month. The exhibition is free and open to the public 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The campus is at 6901 Sudley Road. The exhibition is called “The Underground Railroad Quilt Codes, Fact or Fiction?” Tindall has performed considerable research into how African-American slaves used patterns in quilt blocks to pass along Underground Railroad routes. Her examination of these quilt codes has taken her to such places as Charleston, S.C., and Monrovia, Liberia.

 “The Underground Railroad quilt codes are about the freedom of African-American slaves and their daring escape,” Tindall said.

In honor of National Heart Month, Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of  Lorton and Alexandria, Va. is featuring their “Dance Your Heart Out” campaign, offering unlimited adult dance and mind/body classes throughout February for a special price of $110, including their newest class, Hot Hula. Tim Federle, Broadway Performer and Author Visits Metropolitan School of the Arts in Alexandria

Tim Federle is best known for working on the choreography for Broadway’s Billy Elliott, performing in Broadway’s Little Mermaid, and he most recently wrote Amazon’s Best Book of Jan. 2014, Five, Six, Seven, Nate. Federle is coming to Northern Virginia, teaching “Tips and Tricks to Nail a Broadway Dance Audition” at MSA’s Alexandria studio at 5775 Barclay Drive on Wed., Feb. 5 for middle and high school students from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Workshops are open for advanced dance, theatre and music students. HOLIDAY CUPCAKE DECORATING CLASSES at OCCASIONALLY CAKE

Now through Dec. 31, 2013, Occasionally Cake at 207 King St. in Old Town Alexandria, Va. is hosting cupcake decorating classes on Tuesdays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays, as scheduled and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Each class is two hours and instructors teach four different cupcake designs for take-home cupcakes, featuring holiday designs. Class is $60 per person. Classes will teach Christmas tree, snowflake, Santa and reindeer cupcake designs. Class space is limited and based on availability. A 50 percent deposit is required upon making a reservation. Cupcake classes will teach piping, chocolate molds, as well as butter cream and fondant techniques.
