If there is one thing I love...its a cupcake.

Mini 'cakes, huge ones, the ones piled so high with icing they require a fork and knife. MMMM - that's what I am talking about!

And if said cupcake comes with the added benefit of helping to support a local student in their educational aspirations, even better.

Luckily enough for me, just such an opportunity is coming up when The Hammond Foundation presents its annual Joyful Noise Holiday Bazaar and Bakeshop. This annual event is chock full of opportunities to not only partake in the sounds, sweets and treats of the season, but provides an excellent way to provide educational advancement for Northern Virginia students.

The Hammond Foundation was established in 2002 by Verle and Eleanor Hammond, who had witnessed the power of education to change the course of a child’s life through their own experiences. Both came from families with deep roots in the field of education, and had themselves benefited from this type of upbringing. Their tireless work has helped to exemplify commitment, to community and education.

The foundation’s Mind Wide Open scholarship fund has awarded more than $100K since 2003, supporting students in Loudoun County, VA and St. John’s County, FL. Plans to expand to additional counties, such as Prince William, are underway.

Scholarship funds are raised through a variety of philanthropic efforts, most notably of which occurs each November with their signature event, the Joyful Noise Bazaar.

This free event invites attendees to “make a joyful noise with their giving,” and brings together some of our areas most unique crafters, food vendors and of course, those heavenly cupcakes.

A full bake sale, cupcake decorating factory, holiday decorating demonstrations, a silent auction, hot food and holiday music round out the day. Early birds will also be treated to a complimentary tote bag as well.

There really is no better way to launch your holiday season than by visiting one of our area’s tremendous holiday bazaars. Being able to support local students while shopping, eating and fa-la-la-la laaing your way through the Joyful Noise Bazaar will make your season that much sweeter.

Joyful Noise Holiday Bazaar and Bakeshop is being held at Dominion High School in Sterling (21326 Augusta Drive) on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 9 am to 3 pm.  Admission is FREE, and open to the public.
