Alexandria's Food Delivery Program Now Serves on Sunday

The City of Alexandria’s Meals on Wheels program has reached a major milestone.

Meals on Wheels has long since been delivering food to registered recipients five days a week, but this past weekend, they delivered food on Sunday for the first time ever.

Meals on Wheels is a nationally reproduced model for preventing home-bound senior citizens from experiencing malnourishment and chronic hunger by providing freshly prepared, nourishing meals.

The Alexandria location is led by Senior Services of Alexandria with Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Restaurant Depot, and Tasteful Affairs Catering.

“We don’t tend to think about tasks such as grocery shopping and food preparation as we get ready for our later years, but we should. One of the hard parts about aging is that your financial situation, health, and support systems can change rapidly,” said Janet Barnett, Executive Director of Senior Services of Alexandria.

Now that the program is seven days a week, Meals on Wheels volunteers are needed.
