The Prince William County Police Department released the following statement on the incident later that day:

A preliminary investigation, at this point, has revealed that the victim, a 38 year old woman of Nokesville, got into a verbal argument with her husband, a 42 year old man. The couple drove to the cul-de-sac on Widewater Drive. This is where the argument escalated and the husband allegedly pulled a handgun on the victim and shot her in the upper body. The husband, in turn, shot himself in the head. The husband was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The shootings took place outside of their vehicle in the roadway on Widewater Drive. It is still under investigation as to why the couple drove to this particular street in Montclair.

Police had responded out to the couples address for a domestic issue on June 26th of this year at around 10:08PM. The husband was subsequently arrested for domestic assault and battery. Both the victim and husband were served with an emergency protective order (EPO) which bars contact between the two individuals. The EPO had expired prior to incident on Saturday the18th, and no extension had been filed. It has also been revealed that the victim was a Prince William County employee.
