Hard Times Cafe Brings Second Annual Wing Off | Events

Hard Times Cafe and 106.7 The Fan are proud to bring the 2011 Wing Bowl Championship to the area. There will be a total of 7 wing eating competition “Wing Offs.”

Hard Times Cafe General Manager, John Pecyncki, said this is the second year in a row for Hard Times to host this competition. All of the wings are Texas Hot Wings favor and the goal is to see who can eat the most wings in an allotted time. There are 2 rounds in the competition. The first round is to see who can eat the most wings in 10 minutes and then the top wing eaters advance to the “Wing Off” for another 4 minutes of wing eating.

“I guess they have to be used to eating large amounts of food,” said Pecyncki who thinks that people definitely practice before the competition. The winner of last year’s competition was a student from University of Maryland and did dry runs at local wing eateries.

Pecyncki said Hard Times Cafe is definitely known for their Chili, but said they are also well known for their wings now, and have been selling them for years now. “We’ve developed a big presence for wings in the DC area,” said Pecyncki. And that’s part of the reason they are hosting the competition: to become the destination place to get wings.

The winners last year ended up eating about 50-60 wings and family and friends cheering on the competitive eaters. “It’s a certain breed of people who like to compete with eating,” said Pecyncki and “we don’t allow professional eaters, this event is just for amateurs.”

The top 4 eaters will advance to the Championship, which will be held at the Verizon Center.

1st place prize = $2,500

2nd place prize = $1,000

3rd place prize = iPad plus $100 Apple store gift card.

There is no pre-registration required. You can just sign up on the Official Contestant List onsite early and you’re in! The cut-off is at 20 contestants for each Wing Off, so sign up as soon as you can!
