Business, Events, Schools

Tomorrow evening, Thursday, October 7, Dominion Virginia Power will present checks to 7 area schools to help strengthen the mathematics and science skills of students in grades K-12. The event is being hosted at Hollin Meadows Math and Science Focus school and the students from the school will be providing tours of the irrigation system they built as a result of last year’s grant from Dominion. Using wind and solar power they built, the students hooked rain barrels together to create an irrigation system to complete their learning garden.

The event will run from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The program will begin at 5:15 p.m. at Hollin Meadows Math and Science Center Learning Garden located at 2310 Nordok Place in Alexandria, VA.

Below are the participants:

Hollin Meadows Math and Science Center was awarded a Dominion grant a year ago to improve the understanding and achievement of students in K-6 in science and math by encouraging the use of solar electricity as a teaching tool. Hands-on learning was incorporated through the creation of a "Solar Farm" designed to offset students' energy consumption at the school. The learning garden includes an irrigation system powered by solar and wind energy.

Forest Grove Elementary School in Loudoun County will be awarded $3,000 to build a garden accessible to all students. Each grade level will be assigned different elements of preparing and maintaining the garden, which focuses primarily on the Native American style of gardening. The students will also build and operate a rainwater collection system, learning to conserve natural resources and reduce waste.

Friends of the Rappahannock will be awarded $4,000 to construct an outdoor classroom. It will be visited by students from the city of Fredericksburg and four surrounding counties. The educational field trips provide curriculum suitable for children aged Pre-K through middle school. They will explore plant and animal life as well as the Rappahannocks, an American Indian Tribe of the Eastern Woodlands.

H. H. Poole Middle School in Stafford will be awarded $5,000 to purchase materials for science experiments for students in grades 6 through 8.  Students will conduct up to 34 different experiments in the areas of earth science, global climates, energy resources and pollution. Students will share their results with other schools using blogs or You Tube postings.

IEC Chesapeake will be awarded $5,000 to train high school students in the Northern Virginia area in renewable energy sources. The training is intended to create a growing interest among high school students in renewable energy and technology, while also exploring potential career opportunities in construction and other applicable professions.

Prince William County Public Schools will be awarded $5,000 to support energy exploration kits.  The kits will provide 6th grade teachers in every school with posters, presentations, and lesson plans incorporating science Standards of Learning (SOLs). The culminating activity will involve students in conducting energy audits in their school and homes.

Sterling Elementary School in Loudoun County will be awarded $1,000 to turn a courtyard at the school into a habitat for monarch butterflies with plants that students have been growing. The students will write a nonfiction book of the facts that they have learned about the butterflies. They will also tag the butterflies and record data following migration of the species.

Trinity Christian School in Fairfax County will be awarded $3,000 to design power sources. Introduction to Engineering students will complete two exercises building electric generators and photovoltaic cells. These 11th and 12th graders will make a small-scale solar farm and track the energy collected. The students will also take a field trip to an alternative energy generation facility.
