100 Best Communities for Young People Celebration Tonight

From Prince William County Public Schools:

The public is invited to a ceremony on Thursday, December 2 from 4:30-6 p.m. celebrating Prince William County’s designation as one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People.” The ceremony will be held at the Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas.

What makes Prince William County a great community for youth? Collaboration, partnerships, and youth are a community priority, say officials with the county’s Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Council (HCHY). This focus earned the county the designation by America’s Promise Alliance as one of the country’s “100 Best Communities for Young People Award presented by ING.”   “The ‘100 Best Communities for Young People’ are taking bold and effective steps to help their youth graduate and lead healthy, productive lives,” said Alma J. Powell, Chair, America’s Promise Alliance, in a news release.   "Prince William County has many youth-serving agencies focused on providing resources to youth that help to promote their physical, social, educational, and spiritual growth,” said Clarice Torian, co-chair of the Prince William County Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Coalition. Torian is director of Student Services for Prince William County Public Schools. “We are honored that America’s Promise Alliance recognized what a great county this is for young people,” said Torian.   America’s Promise and ING announced the winners across the United States in late September. A delegation from Prince William County Public Schools and Prince William County attended the national press conference held on the grounds of the national mall. The competition recognizes communities taking action to help reduce local dropout rates and for implementing programs that help prepare children for college and the 21st Century workforce. A $1,000 grant for a local celebration accompanied the recognition.
