About Us

Rainbow Center 4-H Therapeutic Riding

The Rainbow Center is a place where individuals with special challenges come together, and where victories some dramatic, some modest, but all significant are joyously celebrated. Established in 1985, Rainbow Center is a non-profit organization which provides therapeutic equestrian activities to individuals with physical and mental challenges in Prince William County and surrounding Northern Virginia areas. Our clients are children, teens, and adults who benefit from their involvement by developing self-esteem and self-confidence while receiving therapy from an equestrian activity to accommodate their specific condition. Under the guidance of registered therapists and certified riding instructors, therapeutic riding helps individuals experience physical and emotional rewards. In addition to our staff, a very dedicated group of volunteers and specially selected horses complete our team to meet the needs of this exceptional group of people.

Additional Information

Very special horses are used for lessons at the Rainbow Center. To be a Rainbow horse the horse must possess the innate qualities of patience, steadiness, and unconditional obedience. All our horses are sweet-natured and obedient. We carefully monitor our horses to ensure that they are sound and in good health. We have veterinarians, massage therapists, and farriers that work with our horses to ensure their good health. Our horses are carefully trained before any student rides them. They are introduced to wheelchairs, walkers, canes, a special mounting ramp, and other equipment our students might use. Our instructors, leaders, and side walkers work with the horses prior to any lessons.

Testimonials

“My son Joseph has been receiving Therapeutic Riding there [at the center] for the past few years. Joseph has severe cerebral palsy, is deaf, blind and cannot move independently. At Rainbow, Joseph gets to enjoy movement that he normally does not get to experience. There’s not much physically for a child with special needs to enjoy in our area, and to combine something fun, like riding a horse, with the Therapeutic benefits it provides to my son is unmatched.” - Lee Ann Macerelli
