Prince William Co. To Charge For Ambulance Trips

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) -- Prince William County plans to begin charging health insurance companies for ambulance trips.

On July 1, the county will start billing insurance companies when a patient is taken to the hospital by its emergency medical services. The county will charge Medicaid, Medicare and insurance companies but not individuals.

The ambulance fees will be $400 for basic life support services, and $500 and $700 for advanced life support services.

The county's fire chief says the initiative will generate an estimated $3.1 million each year, which will be used to upgrade emergency equipment and provide more training.

Several area jurisdictions have similar fees.

Residents Be Aware of the Dangers of Bottle Bombs

From the County of Prince William:

Chemical bottle bombs have become an increasing problem in Prince William County. Instructions on how to make bottle bombs can be easily found on the internet, and ingredients are often common household items that can be purchased at a local grocery store. Due to the corrosive nature of the mixture, anyone coming in contact with the materials while manufacturing or discharging the device can sustain serious and long-term debilitating injuries. Permanent injures to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract are common.

The Fire Marshal’s Office reminds everyone that individuals involved with the possession, manufacture, or discharge of chemical bottle bombs will face criminal charges for their actions. Additionally, they will be held responsible for costs associated with any property damage, emergency response and mitigation (police, HazMat, fire and rescue), and clean up.
